Our Heavenly Father is a God of grace and mercy. God wishes to receive everyone in His heavenly kingdom. It is a difficult time when our loved ones die, and we are not sure if they will enter eternal peace. We pray that they will make it to heaven so that we will see them again. However, no bible verses support this practice of praying for a departed soul, even if it is a close family member.
Christ Jesus died for our sins and offered salvation for those who believed in Him. The decision to believe in Him must happen before we die. No time of grief spent praying for a friend or loved one will help them reach heaven. We must die in the Lord. However, the Bible contains powerful prayers for rest and peace for our souls.
These prayers are for the living, not the dead. Our Dear God wants to give us rest and peace. The peace of God transcends all understanding. It is a feeling of hope that provides peace so that you can rest. It is like being wrapped in loving arms that provide comfort and dispel our fears. So we should cry out to the Lord in times of trouble, pain, and distress when we need rest and peace. Also, when we have broken hearts, a time of sorrow, or have heavy hearts. Only the love of God can comfort us and make our burdens lighter. Let’s explore verses for rest and peace in our souls.
And I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.” “Blessed indeed,” says the Spirit, “that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them!” Revelation 14:13 ESV
Hear my prayer, O Lord ; let my cry come to you! Psalm 102:1 ESV
“Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:29-30 ESV
What is Rest?
God speaks about rest in two different ways. The first is rest from work. God’s plan was for man to rest from his work. Resting was important to our Almighty God. Even God rested on the seventh day after he created the Heavens, Earth, Vegetation, Livestock, and mankind. The second was an eternal rest. This one is a tough rest for those left behind. The promise of eternal life is for believers. Those of us left behind do not always know a person’s heart for God, no matter how many good deeds they perform while alive. Only the Lord God knows their heart.
Rest From Work
We need rest from work to spend time with God. To rest our mind, heart, and soul. We serve a merciful God who wants to love and protect us. God can give the soul rest. It starts with God’s word. Spending time in the Word allows us to renew as we read what God has for us. This is a time to draw near by meditating and learning God’s plans for our lives. It is a way to connect to His unfailing love, especially in a world that may not show you the love you deserve.
Reading the Word will bring delight to your soul. It can provide direction and answer many questions about God, grace, mercy, sin, forgiveness, and salvation. It will encourage you to question the world and live out God’s promises. God’s ways are not like ours. God’s mercy is not like ours. It is complete.
“Six days you shall work, but on the seventh day you shall rest. In plowing time and in harvest you shall rest. Exodus 34:21 ESV
but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. Psalm 1:2 ESV
My eyes are awake before the watches of the night, that I may meditate on your promise. Psalm 119:148
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. Isaiah 55:8 ESV
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28
Eternal Rest
Eternal rest is the final rest for all mankind. Believers will go to heaven and sinners will go to hell. While we live on Earth, we must decide who and what we live for. If you have chosen the world over God, why do you want to spend eternity with Him? Heaven is the place where God is, and if you spent your life rejecting Him, then you don’t want to live in Heaven with Him.
Life on Earth is about 70 to 90 years, while life in heaven is forever. Sinners who believe in Jesus’ name and receive His divine mercy will live in heaven. Believers should not fear death because absence from the Earth is in the sight of the Lord. We know that to be with God is a life without pain, sickness, and tears. We have the hope of eternal life with God.
“For we who have believed enter that rest, as he has said, “As I swore in my wrath, ‘They shall not enter my rest,’” although his works were finished from the foundation of the world.” Hebrews 4:3 ESV
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. Psalm 23:4 ESV
So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, 2 Corinthians 5:6 ESV
He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” Revelation 21:4 ESV
Praying For the Dead
Catholics
Catholics practice a catholic prayer to pray the dead out of purgatory. The Catechism of the Catholic church believes that the dead must be purified through prayer to move on from purgatory to heaven. Nowhere in the Bible does it tell anyone that this must be done. There are only two places a person will go once they die. They will either go to hell or heaven. There is no in-between place. Prayer will not help those who are lost to reach heaven.
All prayers for salvation must happen before death to be accepted and responded to. No one can pray you into heaven. You must have a personal relationship with Christ. You have until you breathe your last breath to believe in Christ. It is by faith that we believe Christ dwells in our heart and we are loved. This is a new covenant of everlasting love.
Jewish People
Jewish people also pray for the dead through the Mourner’s Kaddish and other prayers like the El Malei Rachamim. These prayers do not mention death specifically, but are hymns of praise to God. For about eleven months after the death of a loved one, these prayers are recited by mourners. The El Malei Rachamim prayer means “God full of Mercy”; it is a prayer for the soul of the deceased. It is often recited at the grave and during memorial services.
Again, these prayers will not affect God’s mercy regarding salvation. After you die, there is only judgment for the sinner and the saints. One judgment of condemnation for sinners and a judgment for the believer with none.
“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.” John 14:1 ESV
so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, Ephesians 3:17 ESV
And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, Hebrews 9:27 ESV
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Romans 8:1 ESV
Personal relationship with Christ
Once we die, all salvation decisions are complete. If we have accepted Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we enter the loving embrace of eternity with God. The grace and mercy of God will wipe away all our sins. He will make us a new creation in Christ. We only need to call on the Lord to be saved. Hence, it is just as simple as that. Once we begin to live for Christ, the old order of things in our lives will begin to change.
We will see the world differently, hear things differently, and speak differently. We will be transformed, no longer conforming to the ways of the world. The Bible will transform our mind, body, and soul. Therefore, we feel God’s presence changing us little by little. We will be able to face every trying time with God’s eternal joy. We rejoice knowing God will see us through all our trials and tribulations. Therefore, we can comfort others when we come through our trials. To be able to bear the burdens of others.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV
For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Romans 10:13 ESV
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2 ESV
In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 1 Peter 1:6 ESV
Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2 ESV

Pray for Rest and Peace For The Living
People Left Behind
During times of loss, it is best to pray for comfort for those left behind. In times of grief, all prayers should express love for our loved ones or dear friends. The God of all comfort will show us how. It could be with prayers, sympathy cards, listening, or sitting quietly while they grieve. The point is to comfort them like God comforted you. To bear fruit of the spirit by showing love, kindness, goodness, and gentleness.
Power of the Holy Spirit
The power of the Holy Spirit will allow you to find the right words of comfort to help them feel the fullness of your love and care. Pray for them daily as they go through the darkest valley of their time. You can help them to see that there will be a time when their pain will become a time of thankfulness. Hence, they will be thankful to have had that person in their life. They had a chance to love and care for them and be loved and cared for by them, however short or long. God promised that we would only suffer for a little while. God will restore you to a place where you can find joy.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, 2 Corinthians 1:3 ESV
But those that were sown on the good soil are the ones who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.” Mark 4:20 ESV
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23 ESV
And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. 1 Peter 5:10 ESV
Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. Isaiah 40:1
Recap of Powerful Prayers For Rest and Peace in Your Soul
Pray For The Living
There are no scriptures in the Bible that speak of praying for the dead. Hence, we should never pray for them. God forbids us to have any contact with the dead (Deuteronomy 18:11). Our prayers are for the living. We are here to comfort and care for each other in our time of need. Each of the scriptures cited here can be used as powerful prayers for rest and peace in your soul. God gave them to us because he knew one day we would face the unimaginable pain of losing someone we loved and cared for. I pray they can be of comfort to you.
Pray For Comfort
We can pray for the comfort of those who seek peace while they grieve. The power of prayer can move mountains, but not for the dead. Only God knows whether the person we lost is in a better place. We can hope that they reached the kingdom of heaven, but no prayers will get them there. Once dead, they are past the time to be reconciled with God. The decision had to be made before they took their last breath. Therefore, our focus should be comforting the living.
Hence, we can pray and provide loving care for those grieving. We can offer counseling, support, prayer, and care for them until they can care for themselves. In the same way, our merciful Father provided comfort for us; we can comfort others. God’s comfort will provide rest and peace for all. We can rest and take comfort in knowing we have God’s salvation. Only those who have chosen not to follow His ways are condemned. Therefore, save all your prayers for those still here on Earth who have a chance to receive the gift of salvation from Jesus Christ.
who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. 2 Corinthians 1:4 ESV
For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 1 Thessalonians 5:9 ESV
A prayer for those who have lost someone they love…
Dear Lord,
I come to you today to give you praise and glory for this day. To thank you for your love, mercy, and grace. I thank you for the opportunity to provide words of comfort for my friend and/or loved ones as they say goodbye to their loved ones. Please give me the right words of comfort and gestures to show them that they are loved, and I will be with them during their time of loss. Let them feel your love shine through me so they know you are the Light of the World.
Please help them to understand that the darkness they are experiencing will not last forever. They will have rest and peace from their pain and joy in the morning again. This does not mean that they will forget their loved ones, but memories of them will be a comfort and not a source of pain. They will one day look back on their life and see the joy they once gave them. Please let this transformation come at the right time according to your plan. I ask all this in the name of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
